The Hérault rivers source is the Mount Aigoual (1288 metres) in the south of the Cevennes, it travels through gorges and meanders through vineyards for 150 km before flowing into the sea in the Grau d'Agde. It is one of the biggest supplies of water in the department. The banks of the river are an necessary stop for all nature lovers and for anyone who enjoys water based activities such as fishing, swimming and canoeing.
Did you know that gold can be found in the Hérault river? It is the origin of its name; changing from Auroris, in the Ist Century BC to Areror in the middle ages and finally in 1790 becoming knows as the Hérault. It is a temperamental river, subject to extreme changes of weather. The water flow can increase dramatically with the spring and autumn rain falls. As centuries passed, the river and its floods have eroded the rocks thus forming the gorges.
In either a canoe or kayak, you will be able to discover the Hérault gorges at the foothill of the historical Cevennes and bird spotters may see some magnificent herons, black kites and kingfishers. A canoe descent by yourself or in a group, in the sunny south, is a ideal way to spend a day or two.
The valley offers an extensive infrastructure for the tourist (camping, bed and breakfast, hotels, good restaurants ...) and our staff can help guide you to them.
